What to Do About Crawl Space Mold

A crawl space is an area underneath a house that allows for access to wiring or plumbing. As its name suggests, it is a small area that you must crawl into, it is not big enough for standing. If you have one of these as part of your home, it is most likely it has mold. Crawl space mold is common, but it can be treated. These areas are prime locations for mold spores to grow because they are dark and moist. You can get rid of this mold, but it takes some time and effort.

First, outfit yourself in a protective ensemble with mask, goggles, gloves and over clothes that can be discarded. Go into the space with a flashlight and evaluate the severity of the mold problem. If there is a small to moderate amount of mold, you can probably get rid of it yourself. If your crawlspace is all out infested, you may need to call professional mold removers to do the job. For those who decide to attack the problem themselves, there are some supplies necessary.

A dehumidifier is a good appliance to have, because it removes moisture from the air. You will also need more protective gear and clothing, something to scrape mold, plastic barriers, and cleaners specially designed to get rid of mold. There are liquid and foaming sprays that are made to kill and remove mold. Your plastic barrier can be put on the floor to catch mold that falls. Make sure to properly ventilate the area, with fans if possible. Next after applying the solution scrape the mold until it is off of the surface. Examples of simple tools for scraping mold include painter's knives and spatulas.

After the mold is scraped away, remove all the supplies and the plastic barrier. Make sure to discard these properly. Then you will want to rinse the area thoroughly until no traces of mold are left behind. The next step is to dry the area, which is where the fans, ventilation and dehumidifier come in. Moisture is the number one cause of mold, so drying out the crawl space and making sure it stays dry can prevent the problem from happing again. Crawl space mold can be a pain, but the good news is that you can get rid of it and keep it away for good.
