Dealing with Mold Allergies
Mold is one of the most prevalent fungi in the world. It is spread by tiny spores you cannot see, which land on moist areas and grow into what we commonly know as mold. Mold comes in many colors, including white, blue, green, red and even black. In the forests, mold helps to decompose trees and leaves which have died, but in the home mold can cause problems. Mold allergies are very common, even for those who do not normally suffer from allergy problems.
People with asthma often have a hard time dealing with mold. At its most benign, mold can cause irritation of the lungs, throat, eyes, nose and skin. It can trigger asthma attacks and cause rashes. If mold toxic to humans is in the home, it could even be life threatening. There are cases of toxic black mold that have made residents very sick. Luckily toxic black mold is rather rare, however if you suspect it you will need to leave the home and have professionals get rid of it before you move back in.
The best way to deal with allergies caused by mold is to get rid of the problem. Moisture is the number one cause of mold, so make sure all areas of your home are dry. Bathrooms, basements, crawl spaces and attics are prime areas for mold growth. However, mold can even grow on drywall, and in this case the affected drywall must be removed and replaced. Bleach and water or a cleanser made for mold removal can be used to kill the mold, although you might need a scraping device for the stubborn mold. Make sure the area is rinsed clean, and extremely dry. You can use fans, a dehumidifier or open the windows to help speed the drying process.
Mold allergies are pesky and irritating, but only occasionally dangerous to your health. If you suspect or know your home is infested with mold, you can take measures on your own or call in a cleaning crew. The right course of action depends on how severe the mold infestation happens to be. Once you have gotten rid of the problem, the best way to prevent it from returning is to make absolutely sure you keep your home dry. This might mean repairing leaks, drying the bathroom after your shower or running a dehumidifier in moist areas.
