One of the most distressing things you can find is mold in the house. You may be repulsed, disgusted or even frightened because of mold horror stories you may have heard. First, do not panic. There is black toxic mold that can cause serious health problems, but the majority of household molds are less harmful. They can cause irritation to the skin, nasal passages, lungs and eyes. Asthmatics may suffer more asthma attacks because of mold in your house.

When it comes to mold, home is the last place you want to find it. In nature this fungi is beneficial, in the home it is not. Detecting mold is fairly simple. The first tip-off that you may have a mold infestation is odor. Mold has a distinct mildewy smell. Also, you might actually see the mold which comes in a variety of different colors and textures. To check mold, you should consider a home mold test. This is something you can do yourself with the right kind of kit. There are kits at home improvement stores and online you can purchase.

Doing a home mold test on your own to check mold is cheaper than having an inspector or mold specialist come out and test for you. Make sure you wear protective gloves and gear, then scrape off a piece of the mold into a baggie or the included testing container. From there, you can actually mail the sample off to the lab to determine what kind of mold you have. For benign mold, you can use mold cleanser or bleach and water to scrub it away. For toxic mold a professional mold removal company is your best bet.

A house mold test can not only tell you what kind of mold you have, but the best way to eradicate it. Whether you hire a professional crew or get rid of the mold yourself, one way to prevent mold in the house is to keep the environment dry as possible. You cannot get rid of mold spores, which are everywhere. However if they do not have a wet place to land mold cannot grow. A dehumidifier can be a helpful device for high humidity rooms. Also, make sure your bathroom and any other rooms that are usually moist are dried thoroughly. Wipe the shower door, wall and tub after using it to prevent mildew and mold from growing.
